I absolutely love smoothie bowls…they add a whole new dimension to smoothies, and at least for me, adding some crunch and texture makes my smoothie a whole lot more satisfying.

Before I get into the details of how to make one, let’s start with the basics- what is a smoothie bowl?

What is a smoothie bowl?

Basically it’s a smoothie, you make then pour into a bowl, add some toppings and voila a smoothie bowl is born.

How to make one?

I like to keep the smoothie bowl making simple. I start with a simple base and then add some of my favorite toppings. The total volume of smoothie is likely smaller when you make it part of a smoothie bowl than it would be if you were to drink it out of a cup- so most recipes that usually make 1 serving of a smoothie to drink, can be made for 2 smoothie bowls.

Here are a few smoothie ideas to get you started…

1. Basic Green Smoothie (makes 2)

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mango or 1 banana, fresh or frozen
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 8 oz almond, coconut, hemp milk (always unsweetened)

2. Berry Avocado Oat

  • 1 cup berries (can be acai or any berries you like)
  • 2 Tablespoons oats
  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1 handful spinach
  • 8 oz almond, coconut, hemp milk (again always unsweetened)

3. Basic Banana Peanut Butter

  • 1 banana, fresh or frozen
  • 1-2 Tablespoons nut butter
  • 8 oz almond, coconut, hemp milk (again always unsweetened)
  • (optional) 1-2 Tablespoons cocoa powder
  • (optional) 1 handful spinach

Directions for all smoothies:

  1. Prepare and wash all ingredients
  2. Add ingredients to blender and blend for 45-60 seconds or until well mixed and smooth consistency.
  3. Pour into your glass- or in this case into a bowl.

The making of the smoothie bowl

So now that you have your smoothie made (by the way you can make any smoothie that you like and use it as your base), follow these steps.

  1. Add the smoothie to a bowl
  2. Add your favorite toppings.

Topping ideas to use:

  • Fruit: Banana, berries, kiwi, cherries or others
  • Nuts/seeds: Cashews, almonds, sunflower seeds, chia seeds, ground flaxseed
  • Coconut: Shredded or pieces of fresh coconut
  • Dried fruit: Goji berries, raisins, apricot
  • Sweets: Chocolate nibs or chips, mochi

The most important part of any smoothie bowl experience is to enjoy it!
